WINTER PARK, Fla., an internationally recognized ICMA Excellence Award winner with accredited fire, police and parks & recreation agencies (August 31, 2011) On Tuesday, September 6, at 11 a.m., in the lobby of the Public Safety Facility located at the corner of Canton and Virginia avenues, the City of Winter Park will hold a special ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. At this event, the city will dedicate the Winter Park Fallen Heroes Memorial site and unveil the final plans in honor of the citizens who were lost and the public safety professionals who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
The memorial will feature a black granite conical stand rising from an area of crushed stone upon which an authentic artifact from the World Trade Center will be mounted. The community will have the opportunity to sponsor bricks that will lay side-by-side creating two defined memorial walkways into the entrances of both the police and fire-rescue departments.
The Winter Park Fallen Heroes Memorial is truly a community project that involved support from the city; design by ACI, Inc.; construction by Walker Construction, Inc.; and funding by the Winter Park Rotary Club. It is only through this sincere community effort that the memorial will be brought to life honoring the lives of those lost in the September 11, 2001, attacks.
